The Look

It’s that look.

Trying to be passive,
Like the burn of your stare,
Doesn’t set fire to her imaginations,
Like she doesn’t care.

It’s that look.

As if she’s not troubled,
At the realisation,
That she’s going to love,
Because love is devastation.

It’s that look.

Those pouted lips poised,
Like a gate rigged shut,
Giving her time think,
With her brain and not her gut.

It’s that look.

That says “back off”,
But also says “stay”,
Almost like a doll,
Yet her soulful eyes betray

It’s that look

Like hors d’oeuvres,
You absolutely adore,
A delicious treat leaving you weak,
And hungrier for more.

Companion

Four years

Sipping cask wine

Basking in fading light

Celebrating our isolation

After decades of stress

Each day promising

Something new

Spontaneity guiding us

A coin flip for North or South

My darling

You have aged with the grace

Of a balmy night breeze

Remember that December

We had Christmas

In a forest

No tinsel or gifts

Just a river

Just our skin

Travel with me further

To the edge of life

For I will always be

Your companion

And the road will

Always be our home

Until the fuel runs out

A Reworking Of Love

“Never close your mind to whom you have invited to peer in,

I am nothing, you are nothing. Though something dwells within.

At first you were a familiar stranger. No thought of love existed,

Then solos met in duets and our melody persisted.

You brought me to a mode of speech without self editing,

Your face brought a source of light I found worth admitting.

Nothing is sealed in fate. Everyday is a choice,

Could you feel the same without the calm in their voice?

Feel our hand grooves gently grow deeper,

Discard others like souls to the reaper.

A trade of giving oneself over to the other,

A destruction of privacy for the gain of a lover.

It may appear at times you lose identity,

Something uncontrollable, its own entity.

Instinctively you will find a balance in the tether,

Even when apart you will always be together.

A secret bonds us upon every kiss

Hand in hand, we float through the abyss.”

Explanation

This poem was created after consuming a lot of chocolate. Not just any old chocolate but Baci. For those who do not know, Baci chocolates come wrapped up with a little piece of paper with a quote about love. Usually from notable people but some anonymous.

I kept a whole bunch of these quotes and wrote them down. Some were superb in simplicity while others were on the verge of being regurgitated into Valentine’s Day card messages.

After seeing them all together I took elements from each quote and tried to embed them into a poem with my own take of love. I did not want the poem to be too romantic but rather a more honest description on what I have experienced.

Below I have listed all the quotes I used for inspiration and would like to thank the authors, Baci and my partner for the material. Enjoy!

The Full Moon

the full moon

watched by a silent soul

noting the intensity of its glow

wondering if its an eerie coincidence

that it reminds them of the one they loved

who died ten years ago

as if the universe is giving a poetic reminder

to never let the memory fade

they feel it is a significant moment

with the moon a witness to their grief

the full moon

shines on another

doped up and done with the night

sprawled in a park

preying to anybody that would listen

that they will wake up to see the new day

caught up in the high

the moon catches their eye

a reminder of their loneliness

in the great scheme of things

the full moon

it offers itself as a beacon of light

in the literal sense

an icon for romance

and many other metaphors

the audience member

of the world

will listen when we howl

and that is all

Green

Green green green

Saying you makes me serene

You idly sit by my footsteps

Watching me eventually forget

Everything I’ve seen

I want my love to bloom as you

And grow everlasting

I want our souls to be entwined

And stay ever

Green green green

Merging around the machine

I have my doubts of our world

In your flesh lies our hope

If we had never been

You would cover everything

Black, silver, white, and grey

Colours dulling us away

Looking at a field of green

Is better than looking at a screen

Cosy In Waiting

We are comfortable under our tin roof. The rain wrapped around us like lover’s legs.

We built this shelter between us to hide from the peril of loneliness.

This fire to distract us from the relentless arrival of dawn.

Occupied by the fear of losing our warmth.

Our corrugated home will surely rust.

It’s alright.

We aren’t in a rush.

Habit

Hand on thigh
Fingers trace back
Careful to avoid ribcage

Let out a sigh
Change the music track
Lights off in our cave

Fidgeting
Cleaning the room
Will mean you are frustrated

Listening
Mentioning my perfume
Will mean you are elated

A glance
With a sly smile
Sharing a secret joke

A trance
Lasting a while
Is love never spoke
